TAURAS-FENIX and ITMO Hold Student Competition in Applied Mechanics

On April 6, 2019, TAURAS-FENIX Russian machinery works and St. Petersburg ITMO University held the final engineering competition in applied mechanics.

The competition has been held by the enterprise since 2016. Every year the participants are invited to the All-Russian Student Olympiad in Applied Mechanics. Within the framework of the competition students of the relevant faculties should solve a case drawn up by specialists of the Engineering Department of TAURAS-FENIX machinery works. The participants were given two months to solve the task. The contestants had to design and present a completely new, novel on the market machine for glazed curd bars packaging in a cardboard box.

In the course of projects work, the teams had the opportunity to receive consultations from the TAURAS-FENIX technical service specialists and could also seek assistance from ITMO University.

Prize winners competed for monetary rewards and internships at the Engineering Department of the packaging industry leader in Russia.

Last year, 9 teams from Perm, Ivanovo, Moscow, Kaliningrad, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, Nizhny Novgorod and Novocherkassk reached the competition finals. Totally 47 students accompanied by their supervisors. The competition winners received monetary prises as well as the opportunity to do an internship at the enterprise. Based on the competition results 3 persons were employed at the Engineering Department of the plant.

This year 9 teams of 4-6 people together with the groups’ curators were also allowed in the competition finals. The students arrived from Kaliningrad, Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Tyumen, Samara, Tolyatti, Volgograd, Perm and the city of Novocherkassk (Rostov Region).

On the projects defence the participants presented 3D-models of new equipment, described to the jury the advantages of the designed structures, substantiated the methods and algorithms they were guided by upon building the packaging solutions presented and the principle of the component parts selection.

The evaluation committee, as before, included TAURAS-FENIX JSC technical specialists headed by the Company’s President Sigitas Mitskus and associate professors of the Management Systems and Robotics Department of ITMO University chaired by the Head of the Master’s Degree Admission Department Yury Sergeyevich Monakhov.

First of all, the jury evaluated originality of the solution and the level of teams’ design training. The elaboration of compatibles design and manufacturability of component production was specially tagged.

The committee evaluated the teams on the following criteria: novelty of the results obtained, originality of scientific, design and technological solutions, as well as clarity, accuracy, consistency and validity of the research presentation.

Young specialists of all teams proved that their packaging lines could surpass by their specifications the packaging solutions on the market. However, according to the competition rules only 3 teams were awarded.

COMPETITION AWARDEES:

The 1st place was taken by Volgograd State Technical University team.
They presented to the committee a processing line with three conveyors for packaging of curd bars. The team paid special attention to the presentation of mechanisms designed by them – device for turning, grabbing and placing curd bars into a box in several rows and box flaps fixing unit.

The 2nd place was taken by Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Construction team.
As a part of the packaging line presented, the team members proposed a designed mechanism necessary for the tightest product packaging in show boxes.

The 3rd place was taken by Kaliningrad State Technical University team.
The team curator received a job offer from TAURAS-FENIX management.
